Single-edged Baltic and Scandinavian Viking Age (8th–11th centuries) Swords with Forward-curved Blades
2025-11-02

This study examines, for the first time, a type of single-edged swords with blades curved inward toward the cutting edge, which were used by the peoples of Scandinavia (primarily in present-day Norway) and the Baltic tribes during the Viking Age (8th–11th centuries). The article describes fifteen single-edged swords from this period with the blades that are concave toward the cutting edge, discovered in Latvia (2), Estonia (2), Finland (1), Poland (1), Norway (7), Normandy (1), and Hungary (1). Based on the analysis of archaeological material, it is demonstrated that the characteristic morphological feature—the inward curvature of the blade toward the cutting edge—observed in these specimens is not the result of later deformation or damage, but an original constructive element. Furthermore, the article proposes classifying these weapons as a distinct type.
