Ziyarat al-Arba'in as a Purpose-and-Return Cycle: Martyrdom, Guidance, Ritual Identity and the Renewal of Ashura Memory
2026-07-06

This article examines Ziyarat al-Arba’in as a Purpose-and-Return Cycle through which Ashura remembrance moves from recollection of martyrdom into purpose clarification, guidance, ritual return, ritual identity, covenantal continuity, and renewed memory. The study addresses a reduction problem: Arbaeen is often interpreted either through grief alone or through the contemporary walk, service system, and mass-gathering literature, while the Ziyarat text itself explains why the memory of Karbala returns. Using qualitative, source-sensitive conceptual analysis, phrase–function coding, and evidence-matrix claim control, the article treats the Ṣafwān al-Jammāl version attributed to Imam al-Ṣādiq as the primary textual corpus, while using the sign-of-the-believer tradition and early Arbaeen visitation reports as supporting reception evidence. The findings show that the Ziyarat begins with sacred address, interprets martyrdom as guidance, diagnoses the opposing camp as moral-cognitive failure, converts walāyah and barāʾah into return alignment, frames Arbaeen as a ritual-identity sign rather than a metric of inward faith, and renews Ashura memory through the forty-day return. The article contributes a non-reductionist model of Arbaeen as return to telos: Imam al-Husayn’s self-offering is read as rescue from ignorance and misguidance, and the believer’s return is read as covenantal re-entry into that purpose. The boundary condition is explicit: faith, sincerity, divine acceptance, thawāb, intercession, wilāyah truth, sanctity, and metaphysical rank are not measured.
